Having just replaced a freshwater manifold on Salish Aire's 3gm30 wing engine before we sold her I can tell you that on the 3 gm30 the part was readily available for about $3000 (ouch). Our issue was a fine crack in the original casting that I was able to find a cast iron welding specialist to repair (good news) but then when I reassembled it and put it through my jury rigged pressure test I showed that my heat exchanger was also failing (bad news) and (worse news) I had a European 3GM30 which takes a different manifold than the US model (they are interchangeable as a unit but parts don't match within the manifold) and to make manners worse the European model is no longer made and no longer available as of about 9 months ago. Sooo, yes any salt water boat really really should be fresh water cooled and the project is worth doing but may be a bit pricey. BTW: I just finished cleaning the injectors on Hyacinth's 3 GM 30 and at least in the yard she sounds a whole lot smoother - we are excited to get her back on the water (between major rain events!) Current project is trying my hand at welding stainless support system for a surround and to support a dingy overhead - more to follow.
