Albin newb intro - shopping 28 TE's

Post by Helm1 »

Greetings all. I'm a one-design sailor/dinghy racer(no aux power) looking for my first non-whaler/tender platform. Located Penobscot Bay, Maine. Looking at the 28TE non-flush deck for new adventures with the family, exploring, obligatory tuna and haddock experiences and all around gunkholing Downeast. Anyway, I have a couple boats in mind - just trying to do my due diligence. Looking forward to participating. Aside from racing sailboats, my expertise is insurance law and claim settlement practices. Out. Helm1

Welcome aboard Mr. Helm 1.
Looking at the 28TE non-flush deck
That would be the engine box models: Usually the early ones.
Welcome to the club.

Thank you Norseman. And, thank you for the flush deck vs.engine box clarification.

Any reason to avoid those earlier models? 95-06

Nah..
Make up your mind, engine box, or flush deck. (I was flexible and ended up with an engine box boat with a Yanmar)

The early boats, before 2001 had balsa coring, after mid 2001 they were built with some plastic foam coring called Airex.
The balsa bonded better in the sandwich, but would rot if breached.
The Airex don’t rot, but does not bond (stick to the fiberglass) as good.
Either way, get a good survey with a moisture meter and go from there.

Hi - welcome aboard!
We are in Maine - South Freeport - and have a 2001 28te, with the Yamnar, and engine box. Recommend it from our experience.
Any queries, glad to offer assistance!
