bathroom door faded to a grayish white color

Post by gmberkley »

Over the winter, my bathroom door panel turned a whitish gray color, and only the exterior panel, not the bathroom side of the door. Nothing else in the boat was affected in that way, the trim and moldings throughout the boat are like new, but the door went south on me, and just the panel, the outside perimeter frame is fine.............the wood I'm told is Cherry, not sure about that, but it does have the "cherry" color. any thoughts on what happened, and how to get the wood back to "normal"

thanks

You are correct, Albin did use cherry .. consider finishing with with a Epifines varnish or even Cetol.

I lightly sanded the affected panel with 320, wiped it down with acetone, and put a coat of poly on it, same result, whitish cloudy , no idea what caused it, and now I'm thinking I'll have to remove the door, sand it to bare wood, and refinish it.

You might try just rubbing in some tongue oil or similar product.
