What would you re-power a 28 TE with ?

Post by Fastyvr »

I have a chance to address a boat that has a sick 6LPA-STP.
Would you go Yanmar again? Volvo? Other?

Or do you re-build?

The 6lp is a very good engine. I’d be happy with a rebuilt if I ever need to replace mine.

My Yanmar has been a great engine... no complaints. I think if you have an Albin that has been set up with a Yanmar, it would be a LOT less work to rebuild/replace with a Yanmar compared to switching brands. Everything from engine mounts to wiring harnesses would already exist. Keep in mind, I've never taken on a project like that... hopefully someone who has will chime in.

Seems that most people are happy with Yanmars... I have a Cummins. Louder, but parts are cheaper.

I've never heard someone with either of those two wish they had a Volvo... I used to have one on a previous boat. Would not necessarily avoid a boat with one of all else was great, but the Green ones are expensive to maintain.

After experiences in Albins with Yanmar, Peninsular, and Cummins, I would go with the Yanmar. I’ve had too many Volvos and find the maintenance costs to be excessive.

i was concerned with the Yanmar after two rough goes trying to buy a 28TE. I'll keep and iron fist on the tiller and wait for the right one then.

That wasn't the fault of the Yanmars, that all points to the owners. I would repower with Yanmar or Cummins, whichever was there originally, that would be the least painful and both engines will treat you 100% if you do them right.

Seconded, don't reject a Cummins boat if everything else lines up. Just put in a little extra sound-deadening. :D

Well, the Yanmar is loud as well.:
Doing a Florida-Bahamas-Florida last year, I wish I would have brought my noise cancelling head phones: Constant drone, loud, but not unpleasant, I guess.

I agree the future for small diesels seems to be with Volvo. However, a well care for Yanmar 315 will last.
