katie G in the Rideau Canal
Over the past couple of weeks we have been cruising in the historic Rideau Canal, now an UNESCO world heritage site. The 47 locks operate by hand, just as they did when the canal was built in the 1830s. Each of the lockstations is a small park with moorings alongside the lock walls. it is a beautiful place for an Albin!

Traffic in the canal is down somewhat this season, mostly because there are fewer American boats. This is attributable to economic problems in the US, the higher Canadian dollar and fuel costs. Having said that, there are better mooring arrangements, particularily along the wall in Ottawa where they now have floating docks with power and where transient boaters can tie up in the heart of the city, only a few hundred yards from Parliament Hill and the Byward Market.
Anyone planning a trip should be aware of the Quebec construction holiday which is two-week period in mid-summer when all construction work in Quebec stops and hundreds of boaters flood the canal with their high speed cruisers, cases of 24s, and boom boxes. Sometimes referred to as "the invasion of the Quebec navy" solitude during that period is hard to find! The rest of the season is great!
Just Google the Rideau Canal and all kinds of detailed information is available.

We did the canal this summer as well in our 27' family cruiser. Montreal to Kingston via the seaway then Kingston to Ottawa through the Rideau and back to Montreal via the Ottawa River.
FYI the Quebec construction hoilday is now the last week in July and the first week of August. The reason we did the trip clockwise was to avoid the crowds in the locks coming from Quebec. Masses of boats waiting to get in when we exited the locks!
Next year we want to do Montreal to Lake Champlain then the Erie Canal, Oswego canal and back via the seaway.
Anyone have any tips for that circuit??
