Timing belt and adjust the valves on Yanmar 6:LP-STE

Post by Saltdog »

The engine is in my 28 TE engine box. How long should it take a good mechanic to change the Timing Belt and adjust the valves.?
Six hours labor seems a little high, and the total bill of $1,400 also seems a little high.

Thank you in advance.

I had that done about 2 years ago.
The timing belt labor was about 1.5 -2.0 hours, including replacement of the tensioner. About $450-$500 labor and materials. Valve adjustment another hour maybe..
Also had the wet elbow replaced ($540 for the Yanmar elbow) and a few other service items such as water pump, etc.
Total was probably around $2k for everything, Yanmar dealer’s tech working on the boat at my dock, driving time from shop to boat 10 minutes each way.
