Started the day building a 15ft hoist with a pully system then began to prep for the engine to be lifted out of the bilge everything went smoothly no issues and sat great with our makeshift roller Cart lol #thecubanway

Impressive! Plus if the gantry was built using screws & bolts for fasteners it can be disassembled & stowed away for future use when the job is done. I like the dolly MacGyvered from a pallet.

We have a friend who recently pulled a much smaller Yanmar 2QM20 from this Southern Cross 31 cutter rigged sailboat. He had access to a forklift to pull the engine, but pulling it out from the very cramped engine space under the cockpit to where it could be lifted out of the cabin was a real chore. I'll pass along the idea of adding wheels to a pallet to set the engine on to be able to move it around. The problem he had with the engine was an oil leak coming out of the back of the engine, which turned out to be loose bolts on a plate that holds the rear crank seal in place. Which of course meant the engine had to be pulled & disassembled to get at those bolts.

Imagine trying to get an engine out of boat like this.

This boat was purchased in Washburn, WI near the Apostle Islands last year, then sailed (mostly motor sailed) 600 miles across Lake Superior & part of Lake Huron down to Bay City, MI near Saginaw, laid up there & then transported across the country overland by a boat mover to Lake Pleasant, AZ near Phoenix, then lifted off the transport trailer with a large rented cherry picker crane & laid up in a boatyard here for further repairs. The crane recorded the lifting weight at 17,000 lbs.
