Hurricane Prep Guide

Post by jcollins »

You can never know too much. Many of us around here have been through hurricanes. I have always listened and learned from others. When I started preparing for Isabel, the latest around here, everyone told me "it'll blow over...your wasting your time" Well, it didn't and I didn't waste my time. Anyway, here is a PDF guide from Boat U.S. The newer boaters around here may find it helpful.

Hurricanes aren't much of a problem here. We do get some nasty arctic storms, but no special prep is usually required. I sometimes throw a few extra lines on the boat just to be safe.

Even the best hurricane preparation can result in this

This one snapped, no it did not chafe, a 1 1/4" nylon bridle, breaking load rating 22,000#. The boat only weighs 11,000#.

Were starting to hold our breath now waiting to see what Tropical Strorm Chris will do. I certainly hope I don't HAVE to go down to Key Largo to secure a boat. :(
