Split Barge?

Split Barge?
We were crusing near Pooles Island and passed a tug and barge. it's not unusual to see a tug towing and barge. But, this tug was pushing it from the side. As I passed I noticed it was pushing it back together. Is it normal for a barge to split? Or was the tug trying to save an old wreck of a barge?

Manson Construction uses at least two splitting "oceangoing hopper dredges" in the Grays Harbor entrance and other West Coast harbors to move and dump the spoil from dredging. As far as I know they've been using them since the 1970s.
